Is a Scarcity Mindset Holding You Back? Learn to reframe your way to abundance
Picture this: You’re standing in front of a buffet table filled with a variety of delicious and nutritious dishes. Yet, as you survey the spread, all you can think about is the one thing you really wanted.
You fixate on what’s missing, rather than appreciating the abundance of choices before you.
This scenario isn’t just about food; it’s a reflection of how we often approach life. I recently heard Dr. Ellen Langer, a renowned psychologist and researcher, explain how our perceptions of scarcity or abundance can profoundly impact our health and overall well-being.
Her work challenges the prevailing notion that resources, especially those related to our health, are limited and exhaustible. Instead, Langer suggests that adopting an abundant mindset can lead to better health outcomes.
So, what exactly does a scarcity mindset entail? It’s a state of mind where we constantly feel like we’re lacking something, that there’s not enough to go around. In the context of health, this can manifest as anxiety and fear, driving us toward quick-fix solutions, usually in the form of stress relief habits.
When we’re constantly worried about not having enough time, not enough energy, or not enough willpower, it can lead to stress and a self-sabotaging cycle. In short, it’s the feeling of not-enoughness we all sink into when we’re trying to, as my Dad used to say, fit 10 pounds of “stuff” into a 2-pound box.
On the other hand, an abundant attitude towards life opens up a world of possibilities. It encourages innovative problem-solving and fosters an environment conducive to better health. This mindset acknowledges the wealth of resources available to us to promote well-being. Instead of focusing on scarcity, it emphasizes the abundance of nutritious foods, exercise options, and support systems at our disposal.
When we operate from a scarcity mentality, we often fall into short-term thinking. We make decisions based on immediate gratification rather than long-term health benefits. It’s like choosing fast food over a home-cooked meal because it’s quicker and easier.
An abundance mindset encourages proactive and health-oriented decisions. It encourages us to invest in our well-being because we recognize the value of long-term health and vitality. Katherine Morgan Schaffler, in her book “The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control,” sheds light on how a scarcity mentality can lead to feelings of inadequacy.
When we constantly focus on what we lack, it’s easy to believe that we are not enough. However, she offers an empowering perspective—what we focus on expands. By shifting our perspective and reframing our experiences, we can find ways to move from scarcity to abundance in any aspect of our lives. In essence, it’s about changing the narrative, also known as cognitive reframing, or shifting your perspective.
Instead of dwelling on what’s missing or limited, we can choose to focus on the good things we have. Sometimes just widening your lens to look at the big picture is enough to make you realize your immediate crisis will pass.
The influence of scarcity culture tends to emphasize competition, consumerism, and the fear of missing out, which is hard to resist. So I was happy to have a dear friend remind me to reframe before I got too entrenched in a recent complaint. As with any mindset shift, it’s a practice best lived though patience and grace.
This shift in mindset can be a powerful catalyst for positive change, not only in our health but in all aspects of our lives. So, the next time you find yourself stuck in a scarcity mindset, take a step back and consider the abundance that exists all around you. It might just be the key to unlocking a healthier and more fulfilling life.
