The Short Path to Oneness

August 14, 2025

A daily mindfulness routine for stress relief

At a time when stress, distraction, and worry can feel like the default setting, Dr. Dawson Church’s Short Path to Oneness philosophy and daily practice can feel like a lifeline.

Blending science, spirituality, and practical exercises, the aptly named Church distills complex ideas into bite-sized practices that shift your focus from the chatter in your head to the calm center that’s always been there. The result is less about “doing” meditation and more about “being” in connection—whether you have five minutes or an hour.

This philosophy closely aligns with the work I do both as a yoga teacher and in sharing the Mediterranean lifestyle. Both are rooted in slowing down, savoring the present moment, and reconnecting with what truly nourishes us—body, mind, and spirit.

Just as the Mediterranean way of living is less about rigid rules and more about joyful, mindful choices, The Short Path to Oneness invites us to find peace not through striving, but through present moment awareness. I get it, it’s much easier said than done!

But Church’s research shows this condensed mindfulness routine, practiced daily, measurably contributes to greater wellbeing.

Benefits (with consistent practice):

  • Boosts mood and resilience
  • Regulates stress and anxiety
  • Increases alpha and gamma brainwaves (associated with joy, learning, and empathy)
  • Builds lasting structural changes in the brain (per neuroplasticity research)

Here is a version of the Short Path to Oneness I’ve been sharing with yoga students and adding to my own daily routine. But why not do your own research? I invite you to try it for 30 days and see!

Total time: 10–20 minutes

Find a quiet spot and take a comfortable seat, either in a chair or on the floor, elevating your hips on a cushion to help lengthen the spine.

1. Heart Coherence Breathing (2–3 minutes)

Close your eyes or soften your gaze. Keeping a tall spine, relax your shoulders and your jaw. Begin by placing your attention on your heart area and breathing slowly and deeply (about 5 seconds in, 5 seconds out).

  • Bring to mind a feeling of gratitude, love, or appreciation.
  • This activates your parasympathetic nervous system and brings your brain into alpha brainwave coherence.

💡 Science note: Church cites studies showing this step alone can decrease cortisol, regulate heart rate, and shift emotional state.

2. Embodied Awareness (1–2 minutes)

Move your awareness through your body.

  • Notice sensations in your feet, legs, torso, arms, hands, face.
  • Let each area relax as you notice it.
  • Don’t try to change anything—just be present with what’s there.

This grounds you in the body and prepares your system to shift into deeper awareness.

3. Inner Light Visualization (3–5 minutes)

Imagine a radiant light or energy inside your body—often in the heart or center of the brain.

  • Let it expand slowly until it fills your entire being.
  • See it as warmth, love, or connection—whatever resonates for you.
  • Allow yourself to rest in that feeling, without effort.

Church calls this part “entering the field”—it’s where you drop into what mystics describe as oneness or unity consciousness.

4. Wordless Awareness (5–10 minutes)

Now simply be. No visualizations, no breath control, no effort.

  • Let your awareness rest in spacious stillness.
  • If thoughts arise, let them pass without engaging.
  • Stay connected to the sense of spacious, open presence.

This step builds the brain’s default network toward peace and connection, which Church calls the Bliss Brain state.

Optional: Add Intention or Affirmation (1–2 minutes)

As you complete your practice, you might add:

  • An intention for the day: “May I meet myself and others with compassion.”
  • An affirmation: “I am connected to all that is.”
